How To Assess A Candidate’s Ability To Think Critically
The hiring process is a relatively standard procedure within different businesses and industries. Usually an applicant submits an application and then is called back for an interview. If you have ever interviewed for a job before, you have probably heard many of the classic interview questions:
- What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
- Why do you want this job?
- How do you handle constructive criticism in the workplace?
While these questions are good for an initial assessment of the applicant, we want to give you some interview questions that really assess the candidate’s ability to think critically.
Being able to think critically is an important skill, especially in the healthcare field. How will your receptionist handle an ornery client, or a power outage that deletes the entire schedule? How will your medical team handle an unexpected scenario like a mass casualty incident, or an employee having a medical emergency? You want team members who can think critically, act fast, and respond to unexpected situations in a calm and timely manner.
The following are some ideas for interview questions that could be asked in order to assess a candidate’s ability to think critically and analytically.
- Describe a scenario in which you had to react quickly and calmly in your job.
- Pretend you are the interviewer. What is one question you would ask me to assess my ability to think critically and analytically.
- Is it always necessary to have a definitive answer to a question?
- How do you go about obtaining new information when you don’t know what you’re looking for?
- How do you know when you have enough information to make a decision?
If you need any help with interviewing and hiring staff, or finding a candidate that will think critically, our team at Eggleston & Eggleston Medical Practice Marketing is here to help.
